A good chord book is one of the most important books to have; not only to look up chords and figure them out, but also to study the numbers system of music to get a better view of the big picture of music theory that most musicians totally miss.

So why is it that most piano chord books just show
pictures but don’t explain anything at all?

At the very least you need a book that shows the numerical orders of chords and how they appear on the staff.  Otherwise, why bother?  If you’re lucky, you’ll find a book that explains the chord-building process but that kind of book is harder to come by than you might think.

If (and when) you ever do find one, you’ll discover the explanation of the chord-building process to be a technical and complicated one that is slow and cumbersome, hard to keep track of and difficult to apply without a lot of time and effort.

Most pros understand those complicated rules of building but you may be surprised that --once learned-- most pros dismiss the complicated way and replace it with a much simpler system most people never learn.  This common sense approach is one of the best-kept secrets of music, and it’s hard to believe no one has ever written about it (until now).

I was lucky enough to find a good chord book when I was 16 years old that helped me figure out the shortcut to building but it took me three months of studying before it all made sense.  The outcome of my effort returned some eye-opening results.

As an added bonus, when the light popped on, it produced a profound understanding of music theory that only the top 3% of all musicians in the world understand (and maybe it’s just the top 1% . . . it’s hard to say).  What I discovered seemed so obvious; after-the-fact, that I wondered if all knowledgeable musicians knew what I had just learned.  Not by in a long shot!

It was right then that I decided to rewrite the standard chord encyclopedia and explain the easiest way to build chords that so many have missed for hundreds of years.  That was 35 years ago and despite the time that has passed, no other chord encyclopedia (that I’m aware of) has ever revealed the tremendously powerful secret to building chords that you learn in Chord School.
